When Can I Start Service?

We'll answer this question, by asking you, 'When do you need care to start?' Because in-home care is such a personal service, agencies will do everything they can to accommodate your situation. However, to ensure a positive agency relationship and care experience, be mindful of these important steps you and the agency should take before you start care:

  • You should review and evaluate the agency to your satisfaction. (See What Questions to Ask an Agency?)
  • The agency should perform an assessment or evaluation of the actual care needs and develop a plan of care with your input.
  • The agency should have a written agreement with their scope of services, prices, terms and provisions clearly spelled out.
  • You should have an understanding of your rights and responsibilities including a commitment regarding the date and time your care will start and who the caregiver(s) will be.

These steps are usually accomplished in two or three days and in some urgent cases, the same day. You'll want the agency to provide the most qualified and compatible caregiver, so allowing the agency two or three days lead time, if possible, is important for a positive care experience. Following these steps will benefit everyone.
